Patisserie Poupon
The day after our eating overload at Galileo, we found ourselves in D.C. thinking about a light-ish lunch. We decided on Patisserie Poupon, a traditional French bakery in Georgetown.
We've been to the place several times. Their pastries are to die for, and Chef Ramsdell often notes their danish and puff as THE stuff to have in D.C. The place is pretty much cleared out of pastries by lunchtime on Saturday, so we opted for a ham sandwich and iced cappucino:
Good sangwich. Gruyere cheese, I think. Thin ham. And the bread, doesn't it look great? The coffee at this place is usually great, but look at our Lame Lame Lame Iced Cappucino:
I don't know the ins and outs of cappucino preparation, but when you pour hot espresso over ice, it melts the ice immediately and creates waterily tepid former-espresso. This is a waterily tepid former cafe-latte. Atypically sucky. BUT I will return; this place normally kicks butt on just about everything it does.

I'll admit the few pastries I've tried from here are pretty good. BUT, the service has been atrocious on several occasions. Two different times, the staff opened the doors late--15 min one time--with no apology to the 3 patrons waiting in the cold outside the front door. The staff is curt, rude, and does not know the prices on their items. I was over charged for several items, again, with no apology for the mistake. The pastries are not so wonderful that it is worth enduring the poor service.
